James Friesen: Bio

James Friesen

I have no formal training in music. I didn't get my own keyboard, or even play at all, until I was 19 years old. I tinkered around and slowly developed my own style.

In 1995, I circulated a cassette tape of what I considered my most listenable compositions, entitled Cypress Trail. Then, in 1997, I created a CD of the same material with an added track in honor of the first Mars rover, Pathfinder.

I sold all of my gear and didn't play for several years, then I bought a basic keyboard and began composing again, mostly just piano pieces.

Now I have a new set of instruments and I am working on some electronic, techno pieces. I am producing them in a live set up, without the benefit of multitracking, so that I will be able to play them in a live setting, if the opportunity, or desire, ever arises.

My music would probably be considered minimalist. Most of my compositions are short and all are instrumental, thus far.

I work full time, so this is just a hobby, but I hope you enjoy my simple compositions as much as I enjoy creating them.
